Maeve is not just a subject in this work – she’s someone I’ve come to know over time.

I first met her as a piglet at Kingswood Shetlands & Friends CIC back in 2023, and the connection for me was immediate. As she grew, so did her presence – not just in size, but in personality. This portrait was created to mark that shift, capturing her at a point where Maeve had 'come into her own'.

The composition is intentionally simple: Maeve lying forward, meeting the viewer directly, set against a soft green ground with only the lightest suggestion of grass. With little else to hold onto, the focus stays on her – her expression, her stillness, and the sense of awareness she carries.

Many of my pieces come from experience rather than observation alone. Spending time with Maeve deepened my animal advocacy and personal commitment to pigs (and all animals) – to use my art to help them not be seen just as 'categories', but as individuals with their own relationships and way of being in the world.

Maeve now lives as part of a small herd in her forever home, and remains part of my life through regular visits. I have no doubt that I will paint her again, you will also see her piglet portrait here in the shop.
