Piglets are often seen as a novelty, for being 'cute' and full of energy - for anyone that spent time with Maeve there was no doubt that she was so much more than this. She had (and still has) a strong, expressive character – curious, confident, and very aware of the world around her.

I came to know Maeve when she was taken in by a small non-profit where I live back in 2023. Through my friendship with the charity I became involved in her care. That time allowed for something more attentive – not just observing, but recognising Maeve as an individual with her own habits and responses - she became my friend.

I created this portrait of Maeve, when she was aged around 3-4months. While there is a level of detail in the painting, it isn’t about capturing a perfect likeness. The focus is on Maeve as someone in her own right – holding attention on her character, rather than reducing her to a familiar idea of what a piglet is.

Maeve now lives in the perfect forever home with other pigs, I still go to see her, but my memories of our 1:1 times together are deeply treasured. You will find her 1st Birthday portrait in the shop, simply titled 'Maeve'.
