Sam is a 19-year-old Charolais cross cow living at Surge Sanctuary. She arrived there at the age of 15 alongside six other older females who had spent their lives as "nanny cows" on a beef farm – caring for calves and feeding them milk. When the farm closed, the farmer chose not to send them to slaughter. Instead, the seven cows remained confined to a shed for two years while a suitable home was sought.

Thankfully Surge had the space to welcome them. Sam and her companions joined an existing herd and were finally given the freedom to live without expectation or demand. Some of the older cows naturally took on leadership roles, but Sam never sought that position. Timid and gentle by nature, she is happiest with her confident best friend, Betty, by her side.

It felt important to honour that quiet presence in paint.

Many people who have met Sam through this portrait have spoken of her gentleness, wisdom and peace. Those who know her personally recognised her immediately. Again and again, viewers returned to the same themes – spirit, individuality, dignity and soul. This painting became an invitation to look beyond labels such as "cow", "livestock" or "nanny cow" and encounter the individual who exists beneath them.

As the first work in the Dignity series, Sam marks the beginning of a body of work centred on recognition. Each portrait in the collection seeks to introduce older sanctuary residents not as symbols or representatives of a species, but as someone – individuals with their own histories, relationships, personalities and presence. Familiarity does not diminish individuality. Every life retains its own meaning.

A donation will be made to Surge Sanctuary when this original painting finds its home, in recognition of the care that has allowed Sam to age with gentleness and dignity.
