This piece centres on an Ocean Guardian – a figure that emerged as the painting evolved, holding together the life that exists beneath the surface. As each species was added, the work became less about individual animals and more about their connection – a shared, interdependent world.
Elements within the painting carry their own meaning, but all return to that same idea. The whale’s tail rising from her third eye speaks to a deeper, often ignored connection to the ocean. The octopus, fish, turtle, dolphins and orca each sit within a wider system – one shaped by both instinct and vulnerability.
Among them, the orca and dolphins hold a more specific reference. They are painted in recognition of Wikie and Keijo, a mother and son still held in captivity following the closure of Marineland Antibes. Their situation remains uncertain, with hopes of relocation to a sea sanctuary still unfolding. Their presence here connects the symbolic space of the painting to a very real and ongoing reality.
This work sits within ocean advocacy – not as a statement removed from daily life, but as something that asks for awareness and consistency in how we relate to marine animals. It reflects a shift towards recognising the impact of human choices.
