Sentient – Original Acrylic Painting

This piece began with a quiet, real moment. Early summer at sunrise, a herd of cows grazing in a field in Surrey – and my husband, standing still enough to notice it. The photograph he took that morning became the foundation for this painting.

What stayed with me wasn’t just the light, but her presence – calm, attentive, and seemingly at ease in that moment.

For me, this painting sits in direct contrast to how cows are often seen. Not as products or commodities, but as sentient beings with their own relationships, awareness, and experience of the world. The title Sentient reflects that shift in perspective.

This piece is part of my wider focus on animal advocacy – using painting to gently challenge the way empathy is applied, and to create space for a more consistent way of seeing animals.

The original painting is currently displayed at Unity Diner in London, supporting their connection with Surge Sanctuary. 50% of the proceeds from this piece will be donated to support their work caring for rescued animals.
