This portrait began with a moment of curiosity – an encounter with a turkey whose extraordinary colouring stopped me in my tracks.

During my visit to The Retreat Animal Rescue, I met a number of turkeys. I never learned his name or his story, but I couldn’t stop thinking about him. The more I've discovered about this remarkable blue colouring, the more fascinated I've become – those colours are not simply beautiful, but form part of how turkeys communicate with one another.

This portrait was created from that encounter and from a desire to celebrate an animal so often overlooked. Turkeys are frequently seen through the lens of what they provide for humans, but this painting invites a different perspective – one that recognises individuality, complexity and a life beyond assumptions.

For me, pieces like this come from a shift in how I see animals – not as categories or symbols, but as individuals with their own presence, relationships and ways of experiencing the world.
