This piece brings together four animals – goat, cockerel, sheep, and calf – each shown through a direct, watchful gaze. Seen side by side, the differences between them fall away, and what remains is something more familiar: awareness, presence, and individuality.
The work centres on empathy, and how easily it can become selective. We recognise connection in some animals instinctively, while others are placed outside of that same consideration. This painting sits in that space – not as a statement, but as a quiet confrontation.
It’s also rooted in my own shift towards ethical veganism. That process wasn’t immediate or simple, but it came from facing the gap between what I believed about myself and the choices I was making. This piece reflects that moment of recognition, where empathy stops being abstract and becomes something harder to ignore.
For those already engaged in animal advocacy, or questioning where their compassion begins and ends, this work tends to resonate on a deeper level. It’s not just about the animals depicted, but what happens when we meet their gaze without looking away.
