When I visited The Retreat Animal Rescue, I met a number of turkeys. One of them was signalling with extraordinary blue colouring that immediately caught and held my attention. I never learned his name, or his story, but I couldn't stop thinking about him.

As I have learned more about these remarkable colours, I have discovered they are so much more than beautiful. They form part of how turkeys communicate with one another, changing in response to emotion, social interaction and the world around them. The more I understood, the more fascinated I became by the complexity of a bird so often overlooked.

Colourful Conversation grew from that encounter. It became an opportunity to celebrate not only the striking beauty of this individual turkey, but also the rich inner lives and social relationships that exist beyond our assumptions. Like so many animals, turkeys are often seen through the lens of what they provide for humans rather than who they are. This portrait invites a different way of looking – one rooted in curiosity, recognition and respect.

This painting recognises that animals are individuals with their own lives, relationships and ways of communicating. It reflects my continuing interest in creating portraits that encourage us to look beyond labels and meet the individual before us. I will make a donation to The Retreat from the sale of this original painting, details of which will be shared with the buyer.

The piece is painted on deep-edged canvas, with the artwork continuing around the sides, so it can be hung unframed if preferred.
