This original painting centres on the moment an octopus shifts – colour, texture, and form changing almost instantly in response to its environment. That constant state of transition is what draws me to paint them; a fluid adaptability that feels both instinctive and deeply intelligent.

Octopuses are highly sentient beings, capable of complex behaviour, problem-solving, and even dreaming. Their ability to express themselves through movement and colour is part of what makes them so compelling to observe – and so easy to underestimate.

This work sits within that tension. The same species that inspires awe for its intelligence and sensitivity is now being intensively farmed, often in conditions that ignore those very qualities. For me, painting the octopus is a way of holding both truths at once – admiration and responsibility.

The surface of the painting reflects that sense of change, using iridescent and matte acrylics to create a subtle shift in colour as you move around it. Textured elements and a palette built on opposing blues and oranges give the piece a sense of movement and depth.
