Ronnie the turkey was rescued towards the end of 2024, by a small non-profit close to where I live. He quickly settling into the flock at 'Kingswood Shetlands & Friends', becoming a charismatic, steady presence among the other animals. A particularly memorable experience during a visit inspired me to create a portrait of him.
During a storm I found the hens and Phillip the cockerel gathered closely together beneath Ronnie’s perch while he stood firmly across the entrance to the shelter, holding his position against the wind. It was a powerful reminder of Ronnie as an individual with his own awareness, relationships, and sense of responsibility within them.
This portrait grew from that experience.
Ronnie now lives at a specialist rescue with a larger flock of his own kind. I still think of him often, and the experience of knowing him continues to shape the way I approach my work.
