One of the most striking wildlife encounters I’ve experienced was seeing seal pups along the Norfolk coast, at Horsey Gap and Winterton Dunes. The area is carefully protected, with wardens ensuring the pups can rest undisturbed, and although we kept our distance, there was still a strong sense of being in the presence of something significant.
This painting centres on one of those moments – a young seal settled into the dunes, held within the landscape rather than separate from it. There’s a natural softness to the scene.
The work isn’t about capturing a wildlife sighting as such, but about holding attention on the animal as an individual. A life in its own right, not a passing moment. If you’re drawn to animals in that way – with a sense of care, rather than curiosity alone – this piece will likely resonate.
