Have you ever spent time with a chicken up close, or held one in your arms? It invites a different way of seeing them – beyond how they’re usually viewed.

Back in 2023 I became aware of a small non-profit close to where I live, through my friendship with the team at Kingswood Shetlands & Friends, I’ve been able to experience caring for animals within their therapeutic setting. It was in that environment that I came to know George.

George was a striking cockerel, full of presence, with rich plumage and a confident, unmistakable character. When he reached the natural end of his life, I went to say goodbye and spent a quiet moment holding him as the sun began to set. That sense of stillness and connection stayed with me. George passed in his care-givers arms, this profound experience marked a shift in my work and towards my resulting commitment to animal advocacy.

This painting began that same evening.

Although the painting holds a strong sense of realism, it wasn't about achieving a technically accurate study. I wanted to recognise George as an individual with presence. If you find yourself drawn to animals in that way, this piece will likely resonate.
